Manoj Mehta, MD
A lifelong Chicagoan, Dr. Manoj Mehta attended medical school, medical residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in the west side medical campus. While most students covet the "private practice" residencies, Dr. Mehta elected to do rotations at Cook County Hospital to expand his exposure to various types of pathology.
As a University of Chicago faculty member, he is active in the training and education of Evanston Hospital and University of Chicago residents and fellows. He has been extensively involved in the endoscopic training of the housestaff in our own NorthShore fellowship program. Dr. Mehta is compiling a video library of endoscopic techniques. The procedures are often taught to trainees only hands on, with no uniformity, and with much practitioner variability. The video atlas will help teach gastroenterologists in training, establish more global standards, and conceptually organize the techniques already used by so many practitioners.
Dr. Mehta's interests include IBD, the bacterial microbiome, IBS, therapeutic endoscopy, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, bowel stenting for obstruction, eosinophilic esophagitis, and management of complicated reflux disease. He has advanced training in small bowel capsule endoscopy, and performs these procedures for all the physicians in the practice. In the summer of 2009, Dr. Mehta traveled to Cambodia and Vietnam and had the opportunity to visit rural, underserved, medical clinics. He described the visit as a "lifechanging event".
Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Mehta is also a member of several gastrointestinal professional societies and a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. He has lectured on a variety of subspecialty gastroenterology topics for various audiences. In 2015, he was invited to give Grand Rounds to Evanston Hospital's Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he recieved high accolades for his presentation on the "Microbiome in Health and Disease".
Dr. Mehta is a firm believer in patient education and patient participation in health care decisions. He will typically lay out his thinking on a specific case, the available options, and help the patient to arrive at a treatment decision using a team approach.
Dr. Mehta performs endoscopic procedures at Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, and St. Francis Hosptial. In March 2016, Dr. Mehta moves his office from its current location of 15 years in Kenilworth, to a beautiful and modern new location in downtown Wilmette.
